Comparison
CryptoQuant vs SmartMoneyAPI
CryptoQuant and SmartMoneyAPI solve different problems. CryptoQuant is an on-chain and market indicator catalogue you query. SmartMoneyAPI is a pre-trade confirmation layer your bot calls before it enters — one request returns CONFIRM, REDUCE, or SKIP. This page is an honest look at when to use which.
Who each is for
CryptoQuant. CryptoQuant is a large on-chain and market-indicator catalogue: exchange flows, miner flows, inter-entity flows, fund data, mempool and network metrics across Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, TRX, stablecoins, ERC20 tokens and altcoin market data. Access is through charts, a REST API, an MCP server, or an OpenAPI spec — built for analysts and quants assembling their own indicators.
SmartMoneyAPI. A decision-support API for automated crypto strategies. Your bot already has a candidate direction; one call to /v1/confirm checks it against derivatives, funding, open interest, whale consensus and on-chain context, then returns a single action your code can branch on. It does not place orders — you stay in control of execution and risk.
A fair comparison
| Dimension | CryptoQuant | SmartMoneyAPI |
|---|---|---|
| Primary job | On-chain & market indicator catalogue | Pre-trade confirmation layer |
| How you use it | Query indicators via REST, MCP or charts | Bot calls one endpoint inline |
| Strength | Deep on-chain coverage — exchange, miner and inter-entity flows, fund data, mempool, Lightning — across several assets, plus an MCP server for AI agents. | One blended decision (CONFIRM / REDUCE / SKIP) with a size multiplier |
| Output | Indicator time-series, catalogues, raw datasets | An action + confidence + reasons your code can branch on |
| Built for | Analyst & quant research | Automated execution pipelines |
| Integration weight | You assemble & interpret the indicators | Single HTTP call, no data plumbing |
Descriptions of CryptoQuant are our neutral summary of a third-party product, sourced from their own site on 2026-09-23, and may change; check their site for current capabilities. This is not a claim that SmartMoneyAPI is better overall — it is a different, lighter, decision-focused tool.
The honest wedge
CryptoQuant is meaningfully deeper on on-chain indicators than we are: our own on-chain leg is a handful of free series (Coin Metrics community MVRV, exchange flow and active addresses, plus DeFiLlama and Blockchain.com), while CryptoQuant catalogues exchange, miner and inter-entity flows across several assets. CryptoQuant’s Basic option, priced at $0/mo, allows 10 requests per minute against our 4 — worth knowing if you want to poll without paying. We found no whale-positioning product listed on CryptoQuant’s own docs, so we describe that as not something they list rather than a proven absence. The difference that holds up: /v1/confirm blends derivatives, whale consensus and on-chain context into one bounded action and publishes the null result; CryptoQuant sells indicators you combine yourself.
What the confirmation call looks like
Your strategy produces a candidate direction; this single call validates it before you send the order.
import os, requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.smartmoneyapi.com/v1/confirm",
params={"symbol": "BTC", "direction": "long", "source": "my-bot"},
headers={"X-API-Key": os.environ["SMA_API_KEY"]},
timeout=10,
)
sig = r.json()
if sig["action"] in ("CONFIRM_FULL", "CONFIRM_REDUCED"):
qty = 0.01 * sig["size_mult"] # HIGH -> CONFIRM, MEDIUM -> REDUCE
# ... your code places (or sizes down) the order
else: # CONFIRM_MINIMAL, VETO_SKIP, or NO_DATA_SKIP
pass # market context does not support this trade, or the symbol has no data yet
action is one of five values — CONFIRM_FULL, CONFIRM_REDUCED, CONFIRM_MINIMAL, VETO_SKIP, or NO_DATA_SKIP (no derivatives or whale data exists for the symbol at all — deliberately not the same as “we looked and it’s bad”). We publish the model’s own out-of-sample result on the /v1/confirm page: derivatives, whale and combined signals all landed in the 49–52% band in leakage-free walk-forward testing — a coin flip. /v1/confirm still blends the signal, because it is a bounded pre-trade check, not a forecast. Full field reference in the API docs.
Pricing comparison
| Tier | SmartMoneyAPI | CryptoQuant |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0/mo — 200 calls/day, 4 req/min | Basic ($0/mo) — API market data only, daily resolution, 10K credits/mo, 10 req/min, 30 days history |
| Entry paid | Trader $29/mo — 3,000 calls/day, 30 req/min, all symbols | Advanced: $29/mo billed annually ($39/mo billed monthly) — hourly market data, 300K credits, 60 req/min, 1yr history, 7-day trial |
| Mid | Pro $79/mo — 15,000 calls/day, 60 req/min, full history | Professional: $99/mo billed annually ($109/mo monthly) — market + on-chain data, 500K credits, 120 req/min, 1yr history |
| Higher | Enterprise $299/mo — 250,000 calls/day, 500 req/min, node intelligence | Premium: $799/mo, annual billing only — unlimited credits, 800 req/min, full history, “Business use” |
SmartMoneyAPI’s numbers are read live from api_service/plans.json. CryptoQuant defaults its pricing page to annual billing (the monthly-billing alternative is shown in brackets above); Basic, Advanced and Professional carry a “Personal use” API licence, and only Premium/Enterprise are billed as business use with redistribution licensing available on Enterprise. Figures are our best current read of cryptoquant.com/pricing and can change on their side without notice.
Data coverage & asset support
SmartMoneyAPI
- Derivatives store across 8 venues; the /v1/confirm composite blends 3 of them into one read
- 16,000+ tracked whale wallets, sourced from a multi-timeframe leaderboard
- A handful of free on-chain series (Coin Metrics community MVRV, exchange flow, active addresses), plus DeFiLlama and Blockchain.com
- Options flow, ETF flows and news/macro intelligence in the same API
CryptoQuant
- Bitcoin: exchange flows, flow/market/network indicators, miner flows, inter-entity flows, fund data, mempool, Lightning
- Ethereum (incl. ETH 2.0), XRP, TRX, stablecoins, ERC20 tokens and altcoin market data
- Access via REST, an MCP server (mcp.cryptoquant.com/mcp), an OpenAPI spec, and a machine-readable catalogue
- No whale-positioning product found in their docs
CryptoQuant’s indicator catalogue is far deeper than our on-chain leg; SmartMoneyAPI adds whale consensus and a single bounded trade decision CryptoQuant does not offer. Pick based on whether you want to build your own on-chain model or gate a live entry.
Real-time capabilities
CryptoQuant’s own pricing page states API market data resolution up to 1 minute on Professional and above, and on-chain data up to 1 block or 1 minute at Premium; Basic is daily resolution only. SmartMoneyAPI’s whale events arrive over websocket in roughly a second and the derivatives store refreshes continuously; a full sweep of all 16,000+ tracked wallet positions takes on the order of 5–6 hours. If your workflow needs a decision at the moment of trade, our composite is built for that; if you need historical on-chain series at various resolutions, CryptoQuant’s tiers are built for that.
API design & integration
SmartMoneyAPI is plain REST with a consistent JSON schema, tier-based daily and per-minute caps, and every tier — Free included — gets REST access and /v1/confirm from day one; Free itself is capped at 200 calls/day, 4/min and five symbols (BTC, ETH, SOL, XAU, XAG), with fewer endpoints and some response fields reserved for paid tiers. CryptoQuant offers REST plus an MCP server for AI-agent access, an OpenAPI spec and a machine-readable catalogue, metering usage in monthly credits rather than a flat daily cap; its API licence is “Personal use” below Enterprise, where redistribution licensing becomes available.
Pros & cons, briefly
SmartMoneyAPI
+ One bounded decision call blending derivatives, whale consensus and on-chain context, every tier including Free gets REST access and /v1/confirm, published null-result disclosure
− Shallower on-chain catalogue than CryptoQuant’s (a handful of free series vs. their exchange/miner/inter-entity flow depth), no MCP server
CryptoQuant
+ Far larger on-chain/market indicator catalogue across several assets, an MCP server for AI agents, a higher free-tier rate limit (10 vs. our 4 req/min)
− No single bounded pre-trade decision endpoint — indicators are yours to combine; usage is credit-metered rather than a flat published cap; no whale-positioning product listed
The verdict
Reach for SmartMoneyAPI if you
- Trade derivatives/perpetuals and need a pre-trade CONFIRM/REDUCE/SKIP call
- Want whale consensus blended into that decision
- Prefer a flat published daily/per-minute cap over credit metering
Reach for CryptoQuant if you
- Want the deepest on-chain/market indicator catalogue across several assets
- Need MCP-agent access or an OpenAPI spec/machine-readable catalogue
- Are building your own on-chain model rather than consuming one bounded decision
Many teams use both: CryptoQuant to build the on-chain model, SmartMoneyAPI’s /v1/confirm to gate the live entry.
